East Los Angeles: the epicenter of Latino theatre

angel.pdf

Hola Gente,

I hope you are all well and prepared for Autumn...I wanted to let you all know that attached is the pdf version of the play Angel of the Desert by Janine Salinas. East LA Rep recently presented a reading of this play at Ave. 50 Studio in Highland Park as part of our on the pulse reading series.

It was a great turn out with a group of 30 people including noted playwrights: Jonathan Ceniceroz, Luis Alfaro, Boni Alvarez, Michael Patrick Spillers and Ms. Salinas. We had amazing readers: VIVIS, Eddie Ruiz, Francisco Garcia, Ezequiel Guerra and Juan E. Carrillo. The discussion that followed was tremendously helpful to Ms. Salinas as she continues to work on this wonderful story.

Below is the synopsis of the play along with the playwright's bio. Keep an eye for our next selection of on the pulse readings as East LA Rep continues to bring you new work by current US Latina/o playwrights. And as always please contact the playwright or their agent if you are interested in producing or presenting any of their work.

Hasta pronto, Jesus.

Synopsis

Francisco is a lanky, awkward, teenage boy with enormous wings made of dirty feathers and trash. When civil war wipes out the small village in Mexico where he has been raised, he sets out on a journey to find his mother in the United States. Along the way he meets Chavo and Sweetie, two young brothers who know life on the tracks all too well. Together, these three outcasts discover the true meaning of adventure, family, and love.

Janine, I am so proud of you! You've come such a long way since UC Santa Cruz. Sorry I couldn't make the reading but I've been in Mexico City working with the National Theatre Company. I look forward to seeing your work. Huge hug, Alma
